UCR for everyone

In accordance with the University of Costa Rica’s principles and continuing with its pioneer and visionary work in all fields of knowledge, the UCR has been known for its tolerance towards the various social manifestations, for the impetus given to the environmental conservation and the commitment to gender equity.

As of 2013, the UCR campus is smoke-free, and in 2012 the University Board published a statement establishing that the institution is discrimination free. Inclusive language is always used in official documents.

Since 2006, the World Environment Day (June 5) is celebrated at the university as a car free day in which the use of conventional cars is restricted to zero emission vehicles. Additionally, recreational and environmental education activities are carried out.     

Recently, in accordance with the commitment to environmental improvement in all its dimensions, the institution built a multi-level parking lot in the Research Campus in order to reduce the number of cars at the main campus. This allows the use of bicycles and offers people the possibility to walk or practice sports around the main university campus. Also, bio-healthy parks were built and physical activity has been promoted through campaigns among students, professors and administrative personnel who spend most of their time at the university.

Accessibility on Campus

The UCR seeks accessibility to infrastructure and transportation providing the university community with disabilities an appropriate and comfortable place for them to develop their academic, employment and recreational activities. This always under a social and human rights approach in accordance with Law No. 7600: Act for Equal Opportunities for People with Disabilities.

The university also has institutions and programs that ensure an accessible and inclusive university environment and encourage greater awareness among the university population on the rights for people with disabilities, the need for equal opportunities, access and participation. An example of this equity policy is the possibility for applicants to perform the Academic Aptitude Test with adequacy to enter the university. This test is performed by the Institute for Psychological Research and it is applied only to those who request it.

  • Infrastructure and Transportation

    The University Campus Rodrigo Facio has large cobblestone sidewalks, facilitating mobility of people with disabilities; and tactile paving for blind people throughout the campus.

    The institution offers reserved parking spaces for people with disabilities, also institutional transportation and bus service with wheelchair ramps. The buildings of the different faculties, schools, libraries, dining halls, theaters, auditoriums, gyms, centers and institutes have internal and external ramps for wheelchair access. There are also elevators to facilitate mobility within the facilities and campus signs to guide people with visual disabilities.

  • The Library, Documentation and Information System (SIBDI) of the UCR has the Accessible Libraries for All Program, which provides special services to people with disabilities, such as document imaging, Braille printing, localization of digital documents, computer equipment loans with accessibility software, loans of library materials printed in Braille format, and equipment and other assistive technologies loans.  

    The program started in 2002 in the SIBDI, along with the Assessment and Service Center for Students with Disabilities (CASED), with the purpose of providing services and information resources to the university community with disabilities.

  • The Counseling and Service Center for Students with Disabilities (CASED) provides support in order to ensure access and equal opportunities to students with visual disabilities, attention deficit disorder or learning disorders, emotional disturbances, difficulty in communication processes or physical disabilities. This center implements projects, support services, information and training for the university community through an interdisciplinary team in coordination with intra and extramural institutions.

  • The Institutional Committee on Disability Issues (CIMAD) of the UCR is oriented to guide the university community on disabilities issues in order to coordinate actions that create an accessible environment and an inclusive university under a social and human rights approach.

    In order to comply with Law No. 7600: Act for Equal Opportunities for People with Disabilities, the committee ensures the incorporation of this subject on its rules, policies, programs, projects and services.

  • The Institutional Program on Disability (PRODIS) aims to coordinate programs, projects and activities of the UCR related to disability, in order to strengthen the full exercise of the rights of this population. Through this program, the university contributes to the development of an academic, educational and administrative environment free of discrimination, exclusion and social inequality; while encouraging the national and international university community on respect, dignity and the exercise of the people’s rights.

    The Regional Program on Deafness (PROGRESO) of the UCR, along with the Counseling and Special Education Faculty, offers courses of Costa Rican Sign Language (LESCO). The courses are for professors, professionals, relatives and people that have contact or work with deaf people and general public, over 18 years, and recognized by the Costa Rican Civil Service. Courses are taught by deaf people specialized on LESCO teaching.

    People interested on learning more about this language may choose advanced courses for training of interpreters.

  • The Project for Inclusion of People with Intellectual Disabilities to Superior Education (PROIN) offers people with intellectual disabilities opportunities to actively participate in the university, in order to provide them with a better life quality, greater educational opportunities and learning through free courses and integration to the university environment.

    The free academic, recreational and sport courses of the PROIN are addressed to people with intellectual disabilities, of legal age and graduated from high school. The courses are taught at the UCR and with the cooperation of teachers and volunteer teachers. Also, PROIN offers the Knowing the Disabilities course, which trains students in disability topics through talks and presentations by experts.      

    The program is linked to the University Community Service project (TCU) TC-571: Supporting people with intellectual disabilities that provides support to people with intellectual disabilities in educational and social areas, facilitating opportunities for recreational and creative activities, family relaxation and academic support. Thanks to this initiative, the TCU students have the opportunity to contribute to the improvement of conditions and life quality of people with intellectual disabilities.    

    This program was created in 2009 as an initiative of the Social Action Department, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Medicine of the UCR.
