People who wish to study at the University of Costa Rica have to take an Admission Exam. This is an Academic Aptitude Test which includes math and verbal reasoning items and is scientifically validated.
Item writing is under the care of a multidisciplinary team of professionals who specialize in test construction. Each year the team develops new contents, which are subjected to experimentation.
The items are written in such a manner that students do not need to remember specific facts, as they can be understood by anyone applying their general knowledge and reasoning skills to solve the questions posed.
Students registered in the last year of formal education have to fill out the registration application and make the corresponding payment. Regardless of the state university they wish to attend, they may deliver the application at any of the Registrar’s Offices of the UCR, TEC, UNA, or UNED campuses or sign up online. For more information, visit http://admision.ac.cr/. They will receive their test appointment, together with a Test Practice Booklet, directly through the administrative offices of their high school.
Students in the Open Education program, those coming from abroad, and those who graduated from high school in previous years will have to pick up their test appointment at the Center identified in the registration application. If a student requires special adaptations for their test need to apply for it and make sure to register this option correctly.
The University of Costa Rica accepts appeals about the test appointment according to the procedure set up for this purpose which is described in the manual entitled Registration Process to State Universities.
It may be scored objectively and mechanically. The score is based on the number of correct answers. One point (1) is assigned if the option marked is the correct answer, and zero points (0) in all other cases.
The test score is combined with the average of the student’s grades in the last two years of formal education on a scale of 0-100 to obtain the “final score” or “Admission Grade.”
To obtain the Admission Grade, both figures are summed and averaged. This 0-100 grade is then converted into a 200 to 800 point system.
The Registrar and Information Office is in charge of informing the public the results of the Academic Aptitude Test, according to the University calendar.
Students enrolled in formal education will receive the results through their high schools. All others should get them from the Center where they registered. Students already enrolled in the university can get them through the Registrar and Information Office of their corresponding campus.
Every year, the University of Costa Rica honors the students who obtained the highest admission test scores.
